How to Prepare Your Blueprints for a 3D Render

The quality of an architectural 3D render depends more on the information you provide than on the software used. An incomplete drawing or one with conflicting measurements produces a render that does not match the real building.

1. The minimum drawings you should send

  • Floor plans for each level, with walls, doors and windows.
  • Sections and elevations of the facades: they define heights, materials and volumes.
  • Site location and orientation: it tells us where the sun hits.
  • Ceiling heights and slab thickness, not just floor area.

2. Clear measurements, not estimates

A render is built to scale. If the drawing has no dimensions, the modeler has to guess, and the result will not be usable for presenting the actual project.

  • Dimensions in meters or feet, consistent across the whole document.
  • Opening sizes: width, height and depth of windows and doors.
  • Distance between fixed furniture and walls.

3. The 6 details that are usually missing

  1. Surface materials: wood, concrete, glass, stone, porcelain tile.
  2. Colors and finishes: a render without a color specification is decided by default.
  3. Lighting types: indirect, pendant, LED, wall sconces.
  4. Preferred views: which angle you want shown (frontal, aerial, interior).
  5. Surroundings: vegetation, neighbors, sky, time of day.
  6. Visual references: photos or images of the style you are looking for.

4. File formats

DWG, DXF, SKP, RVT, vector PDF and legible scanned drawings all work. A PDF with selectable text is better than a photo of the plan. If you only have an idea, a photo of the space or a hand sketch is enough: it gets modeled from scratch.

5. What happens if the drawings change later

Changes made after modeling are billed as revisions. The most efficient approach is to approve a massing correction before texturing and lighting, so the final render does not have to be rebuilt.
